Koh Kho Khao

Koh Kho Khao is a large island off the coast of Khao Lak that is reached by ferry boat from the northern port of Baan Nam Kem . It is a short boat journey to the paradise island of Koh Kho Kao (ferries run from 7.30am to 5.30pm). Here you will find gorgeous beaches and a small laid-back population. There aren't any hotel touts to greet you when you arrive on Koh Kho Kao.

Koh Kho Khao is dominated by grassy plains to the north and more tropical vegetation to the south. The island has a number of different flower species and attracts those keen to spot hornbill birds. Koh Kho Kao forms part of a large estuary broken up into islands. To the east is Koh Lan, to the north is the larger island of Koh Phra Thong and not far off the north west coast are the Surin Islands famous for their diving spots. There is plenty to do such as visiting a few ancient ruins at Thung Tuk, bird watching, diving and going to waterfalls. You also have miles of beach to explore. Thung Tuk is of particular archaelogical significance as Tang Dynasty pottery, an Indian Ganesh statue and Persian glass fragments have all been found at the same site.

The island is famous for being the staging post for ancient peoples who later went on to spread out over Thailand and Malaysia. Also the grassy plains in the north were used by the Japanese in the war as an airstrip. The ancient town is in the south east, Toan Thong waterfall is in the north east. There is a bird watching tower behind Bang Naeng beach. Off the north west coast is a ship wreck that you can dive. You can download a pdf of a tourist map of Koh Kho Kao here.

There are 4 sandy beaches on Koh Kho Khao, all along the west coast. They are (from south to north) Pak Koh, Thung Tuk, Bang Neang and Nok Nah. Pak Koh is nearest the ferry port and has the most resorts. The farthest beach, Nok Nah receives very few visitors. On the north coast there is Ban Muang Mai Pier from which you can catch a boat to the even more 'undiscovered' island of Koh Phra Thong. For those who like island hopping and exploring lesser known spots in Thailand this area is ideal.
